Research

My idea is to do a news style format for Youtube that has comedy aspects and focuses more on lighter news without feeling too much like a serious news broadcast. In order to make a sucessful piece for my unit 10 Multi-Camera project, I need to fully understand my target audience and my pyscho and demographic

A demogrpahic for a tv/show or movie is who is actually watching the project. And the pyschographic is the reasons behind why these people have chosen to watch your show, what is the reason for it? What has drawn this audience towards the project?  Understanding this is vital in order to market your project to the right audience

Guess Demo and Pyschographic:

Because I am wanting to make my project for Youtube, I need to consider who are the main audience that watch Youtube videos on a daily/regular basis. And the majority of those people are teens and young adults from around 15-25, being the main, most active users on the platform. Because of this, people in this age demographic are less likley to watch network televison so are unlikely to watch the news, because they will get this information in a more accessible place such as Instagram, Twitter or Youtube, in a fast paced, often comedic and entertaining format and style.

A concept that is very similar to this, is Some Good News. Which was created by John Krasinski back in April 2020, during the start of the global coronavirus pandemic and the purpose of the show was to shed light onto all the good still happening in the world throught lockdown. John, along with his wife Emily Blunt, managed to create a show that showed that there was still hope in the world and managed to bring moments to people that would not have happened due to the pandemic such as a wedding and prom. The show, due to lockdown was filmed in John Krasinskis office with very little to no budget which really helped the show feel down to earth. He also used a ittle help from his celebrity friends such as George Clooney. Ryan Reyonlds presenting the weather and stars such as Dwayne Johnson and Lin Manuel Miranda surpising some truly heroic fans.

I want my series to contine this down to earth, homemade feel, it will obviously not have thse celebrity elements however I want to also try and get other people involved to present things such as the weather or sport to give it that community feel and to also bring in some comedy elements.

Quantatative data is numerical data, such as numbers or percentages. For example youcan easily collect quantatative data from the census.

Qualatative Data is data that gives you a longer more in depth answer that you would get from an interview, focus group and other primary forms of research

Examples of Quantitative questions

  • How many people play RPG games?
  • Do you buy RPG games?
  • Would you consider buy an RPG game?

Examples of Qualitative questions?

  • What is your favourite RPG game?
  • What RPG games have you played?
  • When do you play RPG games?

Valid/Reliable data: This is where you get the same result no matter how many times you times you repeat the investigation or experiement.

Secondary Research:

In order to make this project, I will be looking at Youtube "news" programmes that have this fast paced, infromal format such as Some Good News, as well as more satirical comedic sketches such as Tries Sports News that parodies Sky Sports, This will be helpful in helping me to understand how I need to present myself on camera in this informal, more relaxed news format.

However I will also be looking at professional news broadcasts from professional networks such as the BBC and ITV. These will help me to understand all the codes and conventions of a news broadcast to help me make my piece as accurate to a professional set up as I can make it.

I will be looking at Halls Reception Theory  in order to understand how to approach my audience and how I want them to interept the information that I am going to give them. This will able to also determine my relationship status with the viewers.

Primary Reserch:

I will be conducting a survey that will give me real insight to how my target audience get their news, viewing habits etc in order to fully understand my Demo and Pyscho graphic data. Which will really help me understand how to produce and market my piece to the correct audience.

My ideal demographic for my project would be Male, aged between 16-24, who live in the UK. However I would still would like to appeal to a female audience of the same age bracket. I am going to market the show for mainly students currently studying at either college or University.

The reason they wouldbe watching the show would be to get away from the stress of thier everyday life such as work, relationships, university and family. So they can sit down and have a laugh, and enjoy listening to some good news that will hopefully brighten their day.

Codes and Conventions:

Because my project is a news type programme I will be looking into codes and conventions of news programmes:

Shot Types: The most common shot type for a news programme is Medium close up, this is where the camera starts from the shoulders up, meaning that the head fits perfectly into the frame, giving the audience a perfect view of the presenters facial expressions and emotions.

Graphics: On news programmes, lots of small graphics are often used, such as name cards for presenters or people being interviewed, as well as a small graphic down at the bottm of screen telling the time.  As well as these smaller graphics, there are some much more obvious graphics such as a headline bulletin going along the bottom, often with the top stories of the day and sometimes sports scores also going along to the right of the news reader. They also use a green screen map graphic of the country or region when presenting the weather

Cutaways: News programmes use cutaways when covering stories, these are accompanied by a reporter telling the story as well interviews with people involved in the story. These cutaways provide contect to the story and help establish location. They often use voice over

Archival footage: such as videos or photographs that were taken previously to the shoot, which help providemore contect and understanding to the news report.

Interviews: It allows people being filmed to speak directly about events, prompted by the questions asked by the reporter. An interview will take placeon screen and the people being interviewed are those who have something to do with a event or person who share their experiences.  Interviews can provide additional context to a story especially if the person being interviewed has a unique connection to a person or event by sharing their perspective and experience which can help provide evidence.

Title Card: 30 second or so, title card which might summurise what is coming up on the programme. Will often use shots of a hospital or the government in the title card

Viusal Code: The news presenters are always dressed in a formal manner, such as a suit and tie which makes them look professional and trustworthy.

Market Segmentation:

My primary audience will be primarily male, 18-24 years old who live in England. They will be studying at University. They currently have a low-income status,   who come from a lower-middle class background who enjoy an active and social lifestyle who regularly watch YouTube

A, Plays Football every weekend

I, Intrested in sports, movies, youtube

O- supports the labour party

My target audience is primarily males aged between 18-24 and who live in England. They will be studying at University, anywhere in the UK so there is no primary location that I am targeting but my target audience will be studying in a city such as London or Manchester. Because they are at University, they will have a low income because they will only have a part time job to help pay for the expenses such as accommodation. But they come from a low-middle class background as they were able to afford University. They enjoy an active lifestyle, playing sports such as football regularly as well as an active social life, hanging out with friends and going out to the pub. My target audience watch YouTube regularly, watching YouTubers such as KSI, Memeulous and the Sidemen.

A,  Plays football every Saturday for his University team and used to play for his local team

I, Interested in sports such as football, F1 and boxing. Movies suc as comedy and action movies and frequently watches YouTube

O, Supporter of the labour party,

This is very helpful to my research into my Multi Cam project as my is a YouTube news piece, This project will be heavily focuses on good news with lots of comedy and satirical elements and I feel that an audience of this age will want to watch this because they aren’t going to be the age demographic interested in the standard network news
